Sarah Taylor runs The North Bridge Inn in Exeter, more popularly known as The NBI. The pub is located at 11 St David’s Hill, Exeter.

In the 1850s it was known as The North Bridge Tavern, and for a short while called The Ship, but in more recent times it has been called the North Bridge Inn.

Sarah started started the business with a partner who had years of experience in the trade and they opened the doors on 30th October 2009. Unfortunately Sarah’s partner left after 8 months trading and she has been running the business alone ever since.

NBI is a real locals pub selling good local beer and cider and showcasing local bands and art

Sarah says ‘I like to supply local products where I can and promote South West businesses. We have four draught ales on pump which are all brewed in and around Devon.

There are over 40 breweries in Devon alone, so I’m spoilt for choice!’ Sarah is delighted to have been listed in the Camra Good Beer Guide 2012.

She also stocks five of the ciders from Sandford Orchards in Crediton, Devon and tries where she can to source British brewed bottled lagers, ales and spirits and a few more exotic choices too!

Sarah believes there is a really good community spirit in her pub and there are a lovely group of locals who have really supported her in bringing their run down local pub back to life. Recently they have helped with the complete redecoration of the pub.

It’s the welcoming feel of the pub, that makes it special. There is a community that pop in and out, yet tourists and new faces will find a friendly welcome, too.

Sarah welcomes children and dogs and there is a really relaxed atmosphere which other pubs don’t always have. She does try to remember what the regulars drink as well as their names.

She knows the beers well too so can always advise people on the beer and will give tasters to those still unsure which one to choose!

No Experience, No Problem!

From Nursery Nurse To Landlady

Sarah had no experience of working in a pub before taking on The NBI. In fact on the opening evening she was taking lessons in how to pour a pint!

She reflects ‘I am a qualified Nursery Nurse who has spent the last 15 years working in childcare, however I have really enjoyed the change of career! I always said I work Monday to Friday 9-5 and this is a total change around but I think it kinda suits me!’

Sarah thinks it is the people in the South West that makes it a lovely place to run a business from. She feels they always take time to get to know you and how you do business and are very supportive and honest! Mind you, she considers, if they don’t like something, they will tell you directly!

What of the future? Sarah says “I would like to be able to expand the food service we provide. We currently have a Lazy Lunch on Sunday afternoons and have our Italian Mammas who cook lovely pizzas on site once a month. It would be nice to provide an evening meal each day.”

Sarah loves the huge variety of different people who come through her doors. This also includes many musicians as there is live music every Friday night. Some of the bands who play have a large international following! There is also an Open Mic session on a Wednesday.

Sarah’s customers mainly come from Exeter, both the local St David’s community and further afield. Some regulars come from across the country although she doesn’t see them so often! She even has a customer who lives in France who pops in every year to say hello!

Sarah finds the best way the pub is promoted is through word of mouth. She does a monthly newsletter which is sent out on email and she also has a Facbook page. She promotes music and food events around the pub and local artists have an opportunity to display their work.
